Uganda Rural Development and Training Programme hosted Ms. Louise Johansson, the program
manager at Social Initiative the long-term valued friends of URDT.
Social Initiative has for over time supported education programs among which URDT Girls School, ARU
and URDT Institute.
URDT is implementing the 2-Generations Approach in its schools where parents and their children
learn together and work together as a family to transform their homes. While at school, learners are
engaged in farm activities in the pupil managed school farms where they acquire knew and organic
farming skills, which they later transfer to their respective homes.
With support from Social Initiative, the 2-Generations Approach was upscaled in 10 schools with the
aim of improving income and nutrition in rural primary schools of Kagadi, Kibaale and Kakumiro
districts.
During her visit on 28/4/2025, Ms. Johansson visited Burora Primary School, which is one of the 10
schools implementing the 2-Generations Approach and a home of Mr. Kakuru Deo in Kigwabya village,
a father of 6 children, 5 of whom are pupils at Burora Primary School.
Mr. Kakuru appreciated URDT for the work being done in schools and families saying that the visionary
approach has helped improve his family’s standard of living. “The visionary approach has helped us
develop as a family. We do everything as a team in that even when I am not around, anybody at home
can manage the projects we have at home effectively,” Kakuru explained. He added that his vision is to
have all his children attain a university degree.

One of the pupils, Namukisa Teddy expressed her gratitude for the skills acquired while working on
the school farm saying that they have helped her family eat nutritious organic food. “We were taught
how to make organic manure and how to make kitchen gardens which we also do at home,” she says.
On her way from Mr. Kakuru’s home, Ms. Johansson visited another home of one of the parents at
Burora Primary School where members of their parent’s group had gathered for rotational labor to
help her dig a water harvesting pit led by Ms. Anakuya Mary Gorret, the Epicenter Manager for Burora
Sub County.
Louise appreciated the spirit of togetherness exhibited among community members and applauded
URDT for the great work being done to transform rural communities.
