On 25th of August, 2024, the Uganda Rural Development and Training Program (URDT) and African Rural University (ARU), in partnership with the Rotaract Club of Kagadi, actively participated in the annual Rotary Cancer Run held in Kagadi Town. The event aimed to raise funds for the purchase of a radiotherapy machine at St. Joseph’s Nsambya Hospital, a crucial step in improving cancer treatment in Uganda.

Since 2017, the Uganda Rural Development and Training Program (URDT) has been at the forefront of fighting cervical cancer through various initiatives aimed at raising awareness, promoting early detection, and providing access to medical care in rural communities. Recognizing the critical need for intervention, URDT has implemented several projects that target women and girls, the most vulnerable to the disease

The Rotary Cancer Run drew participants across the district, including students of ARU, local leaders, and community members, all united by a shared commitment to fighting cancer. URDT and ARU’s participation demonstrated their continued dedication to community empowerment and health initiatives.

Presided as the chief runner, Dr. Mwalimu Musheshe, the vice chancellor ARU who was represented by Ms. Josephine Nampewo, the Executive Assistant, emphasized the importance of creating awareness about cancer and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to this noble cause.

“Through our cervical cancer projects, we focus on creating awareness and organizing community outreach programs to educate women on the importance of regular screenings and the risks associated with cervical cancer. So far, over 22,448 women in the Bunyoro sub-region have been screened, 1,922 have been treated, and 102 referred to Mulago Cancer Institute. We look forward to continuing to deliver these services in rural communities,” Nampewo said

Funds raised from the event will go towards the acquisition of the much-needed radiotherapy machine, enhancing the hospital’s capacity to treat cancer patients more effectively.
