Kagadi-Kibaale Community Radio Marks 25 Years of Uninterrupted Broadcast

Kagadi-Kibaale Community Radio (KKCR) began as an idea inspired by the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the aim of emphasizing the importance of community participation in environmentally friendly sustainable development. In alignment with this global call, KKCR and two other sister stations in Kenya and Tanzania were launched to serve as platforms for rural voices—enabling local communities to engage in discussions that shape their lives, particularly in the area of environmental stewardship.

On August 20, 2000, KKCR went on air with a frequency modulation of 91.7, broadcasting in several local languages including Runyakitara, Luganda, Lukonzo, Swahili, as well as English. With the mission “For Human and Rural Development,” the station is unique in that it empowers rural people to serve as co-hosts alongside professional presenters. KKCR brings radio programs directly into communities, where members actively participate in discussions that influence their lives.

Outreach and Impact

Over the years, KKCR’s listenership has grown to over 4,000,000 listeners across more than 20 districts in Uganda, with even more accessing it online via www.kkcr.urdt.net. The station offers a diverse range of programs covering topics such as rural development, indigenous knowledge, conservation, human rights, land rights, health, education, gender equality, and local governance. These programs are designed to inform, educate, and empower community members—fostering active participation in societal development.

Silver Jubilee Celebrations

From August 20–23, 2025, Kagadi-Kibaale Community Radio organized a variety of activities to commemorate 25 years of transformative, community-based radio programming. Activities included a clean-up and tree planting campaign aimed at beautifying Kagadi Town, a marathon, a football match between KKCR staff and listeners, as well as a campfire, all of which contributed to strengthening partnerships with stakeholders.
