Training Offered

URDT has developed courses for farmers, youth, women, artisan, and staff of development agents. These include:

      1. Rural farming for business. The course is for farmers and youth who dropped out of school. Aims: To create a critical mass of rural entrepreneurs who contribute significantly to the rural economy, have integrity and the capacity to improve their own situation, create their own jobs and practice good citizenship.

         

 

    1.  Sustainable agriculture and Farmers’ institutions development training
      Aim: To establish farm entrepreneurs and farmers’ cooperates and link them to regional markets and international Fair Trade arrangements. URDT uses its 50-acre demonstration farm and the model farms of its students to train both male and female farmers in a holistic view on farming. This includes sessions on high-value cash crops, sustainable agricultural, appropriate technologies, entrepreneurship, farming as a business, family cooperation, food security, environmental management, value addition, organic farming, storage, and marketing.
    2. Non-formal vocational skills training
      Aim: To facilitate the youth to have direct employable skills that they can apply in a rural setting to generate income.
    3. Non-formal entrepreneurship training for artisans
      Aims:
      • to train the youth in refurbishing different types of used tools and equipment for the fabrication of farm tools and domestic items;
      • to provide tools to artisan youth with the support from Tools for Self Reliance (UK) and Derde Wereld Werkplaats (the Netherlands);
      • to train the youth and trainers to learn to repair sewing and knitting machine.
    4. Appropriate technologies training
      Aim:
      To equip the youth and women with skills and marketing strategies to develop and distribute rural technologies especially those that deal with climate change. The course includes; Gender and technology, simple irrigation systems, water harvesting solar electricity, fruit solar dryers; food processing and construction of charcoal fridges.
    5. Development agencies training in:
      • A gendered outlook of HIV/AIDS
      • Human Rights Based Approach to Programming
      • Visionary Leadership
      • Community Action Planning
      • Technologies for Creating
      • Sustainable Rural Development
